The descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, God’s chosen people, paraded out of Egypt after four hundred years of abusive slavery. They had witnessed God’s miraculously powerful hand; ten plagues, the Pillar of Fire, the opening of the Red Sea, and the death of Pharoah and his military henchmen.

What do you do when God saves you from slavery to a foreign master? What do you do when God transforms your life by His graciousness? What do you do when God mercifully sets you free?

“Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord. They said: I will sing to the Lord,

for he is highly exalted; he has thrown the horse and its rider into the sea. The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. This is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him” (Exodus 15:1–2).

Standing on the eastern banks of the Red Sea, looking back toward Egypt, now far removed, the emancipated slaves responded to God’s goodness by singing His praises. They worshipped!

“Lord, who is like you among the gods? Who is like you, glorious in holiness, revered with praises, performing wonders? You stretched out your right hand, and the earth swallowed them. With your faithful love, you will lead the people you have redeemed; you will guide them to your holy dwelling with your strength” (Exodus 15:11–13).

Look back on your life. Do you remember when you served a foreign god? Do you remember your life of slavery? … of misery? … of shame? Do you recall God’s gracious hand guiding you to safety and salvation?

So… let’s sing!

“This is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him!”

“… think on these things” (Philippians 4:8, KJV).
