THE SPIRIT OF GOD

Jesus was around before the nativity in Bethlehem and God’s Spirit was introduced long before Pentecost. In fact, each of the ever-existing persons of the Holy Trinity were instrumental in creation.
“The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created” (John 1:1–3). Jesus is “the Word … He was with God in the beginning.”
Likewise, the Spirit of God is mentioned in the Bible’s first sentences. “The earth was formless and empty, darkness covered the surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters” (Genesis 1:2).
The inspired Word pictures a hen “hovering over” her nest. When darkness blanketed the “formless and empty … watery depths,” the Omnipresent Spirit was present, brooding over, protecting, nurturing creation.
Every born-again believer can give thanks for the Spirit! With the Psalmist, we can sing:
“The one who lives under the protection of the Most High dwells in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say concerning the Lord, who is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust … He will cover me with his feathers; I will take refuge under his wings. His faithfulness will be a protective shield” (Psalm 91:1–4).
Rejoice! The Spirit “hovers over” us!
“… think on these things” (Philippians 4:8, KJV).
