THE PEOPLE IN THE BEGINNING: REBEKAH

Not enough love! Isaac and Rebekah’s home was marred and scarred by that reality. There wasn’t enough love to go around.

How sad! Can you think of another phrase that registers so much pain? Not enough love!

Although Rebekah had been miraculously chosen as Isaac’s wive and Abraham’s daughter-in-law, their marriage had challenges. One noteworthy trail lasted twenty years.

The couple married when Isaac was forty (Genesis 25:20). The first-born didn’t come along until Isaac was sixty (Genesis 25:26). Surely the waiting caused stress and strain in the home. And like Hannah, surely Rebekah “prayed to the Lordand wept with many tears” (1 Samuel 1:10).

That wasn’t the only trouble. Isaac made the same mistakes that his daddy had made. Abraham had twice claimed that his wife was just his sister (Genesis 12:11; 20:2). He did so to save himself from other powerful men that might have killed him to steal his wife. So, to save his skin, he offered his wife to another man.

Isaac did the same dirty deed. “When the men of the place asked about his wife, he said, ‘She is my sister,’ for he was afraid to say ‘my wife,’ thinking, ‘The men of the place will kill me on account of Rebekah, for she is a beautiful woman’ ”(Genesis 26:7). That’s not the picture of marital bliss!

After waiting twenty years, when Rebecah finally gave birth, she bore twins.

 “Isaac loved Esau … but Rebekah loved Jacob” (Genesis 25:28). This only led to deception and conflict in an already fractured home. Not enough love. How sad!

What’s the punch line?

Pray for young families. Pray for faithful and Godly dads and moms. With Jesus’ abundant love, pray that there would be more than enough love to go around!
