SILENT NIGHT

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness covered the surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light” (Genesis 1:1–3). God’s first command and God’s first miracle brought light into the lightless dark.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… In him was life, and that life was the light of men” (John 1:1, 4). Jesus declared, “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life” (John 8:12).

One of our favorite Christmas Carols reminds us that God delights in defeating darkness!

Silent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright!

Silent night, holy night, darkness flies, all is light!

Silent night, holy night, Wondrous star, lend thy light!

We needn’t wallow in darkness because Jesus, the Creator, brought light into our chaos.

We needn’t walk in darkness because Jesus, born in Bethlehem, brought light into the cold night.

We needn’t remain in darkness because Jesus, our Rescuer and Redeemer chases away the darkness!

Silent night, holy night,

Son of God, love's pure light

Radiant beams from Thy holy face,

With the dawn of redeeming grace.

“… think on these things” (Philippians 4:8, KJV).
