NINETY-NINE YEARS OLD

“When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him, saying, ‘I am God Almighty. Live in my presence and be blameless. I will set up my covenant between me and you, and I will multiply you greatly … You will become the father of many nations’ ” (Genesis 17:1–4).

Nothing is impossible for God. Nothing. But Abraham was ninety-nine and Sarah was eighty-nine. Have a baby? That’s impossible!

But read again the words of God. “I am God Almighty!” I am El Shaddai. That’s NOT … God mostly mighty… sort of mighty… a little bit mighty… but God Almighty.

This, by the way, is the first time in Scripture that we read this great name for God. Centuries later, God reminded Moses that He is “God Almighty” (Exodus 6:3) saying, “I have heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are forcing to work as slaves, and I have remembered my covenant. Therefore tell the Israelites: I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from the forced labor of the Egyptians and rescue you from slavery to them. I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and great acts of judgment” (Exodus 6:5-6). Only God Almighty could rescue the Israelites from Egyptian captivity and take them to “a land flowing with milk and honey” (Exodus 3:8).

And me and you? We “were dead in (our) trespasses and sins in which (we) previously walked according to the ways of this world, according to the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit now working in the disobedient. We too all previously lived among them in our fleshly desires, carrying out the inclinations of our flesh and thoughts, and we were by nature children under wrath” (Ephesians 2:1–3).

God Almighty is the author of salvation! He alone saves, redeems, restores!

“… think on these things” (Philippians 4:8, KJV).
