NAMED, BUT UNKNOWN - CLEOPAS

You probably know him as the Emmaus disciple. Cleopas is named, but mostly unknown.

Cleopas and his anonymous companion, likely his wife, were kicking up dust on the seven-mile journey from Jerusalem to their home in the little village of Emmaus. They had been in Jerusalem for the Passover celebration (Luke 24:13-35).

As they trudged home, defeated and discouraged, they mumbled sadly about Jesus’ crucifixion, and about the strange reports of the empty tomb and angels announcing His resurrection.

Somewhere along the way, they were joined by a stranger who asked, “What is this dispute that you’re having with each other as you are walking?” (Luke 22:17). We know that the stranger was indeed Jesus. They didn’t. “They were prevented from recognizing him” (Luke 24:16).

As they journeyed, Jesus talked and taught. “Beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted for them the things concerning himself in all the Scriptures” (Luke 24:27). It wasn’t until they gathered around the dinner table that “their eyes were opened … they recognized (Jesus), but he disappeared from their sight” (Luke 24:31). Poof!

Later, Cleopas exclaimed, “Weren’t our hearts burning within us while he was talking with us on the road and explaining the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:32).

Mr. and Mrs. Cleopas didn’t have the whole Bible. We do. So, I challenge you… read God’s word. See if the Holy Spirit won’t open your eyes to see Jesus… and see if your heart doesn’t burn within you.
