MINISTERING SPIRITS

The anonymously written book of Hebrews makes the compelling argument that Jesus is better! Jesus is better than the Old Testament’s priests and prophets… His sacrifice is better than the sacrifice of sheep and goats… Jesus is better.

The author begins his letter by arguing that Jesus is better than the angels. (The first century Jews had a very high regard for angels.) Jesus “became superior to the angels, just as the name he inherited is more excellent than theirs … Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve those who are going to inherit salvation?” (Hebrews 1:4, 14).

Did you get that? Jesus is King of kings, and angels are “ministering spirits” directed by the King to serve Christians.

Other passages make a similar point. “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and rescues them” (Psalm 34:7). “Because you have made the Lord—my refuge, the Most High—your dwelling place, no harm will come to you; no plague will come near your tent. For he will give his angels orders concerning you, to protect you in all your ways. They will support you with their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone” (Psalm 91:9-12). “I am going to send an angel before you to protect you on the way and bring you to the place I have prepared” (Exodus 23:20).

The Bible doesn’t use the term “guardian angels” … but the God who protected Daniel by sending an angel to “shut the lions’ mouths” (Daniel 6:22) still has charge of His multitude of angels who are busy in the unseen realm.

Think about it… How many times have you been a millisecond away from a car crash? Isn’t it possible that God’s “ministering spirits” were there guiding and guarding?

“… think on these things” (Philippians 4:8, KJV).
