LIGHT

Light is a recurring subject in the Bible.

There is a link between light and the instructional value of God’s Word. “Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path” (Psalm 119:105) and “the revelation of your words brings light and gives understanding to the inexperienced”(Psalm 119:130).

Light is associated with truth. “Send your light and your truth; let them lead me” (Psalm 43:3).

In Isaiah 5:20 light is linked to good. “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness.”

In Psalm 27:1, light corresponds to salvation. “The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom should I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—whom should I dread?”

Elsewhere is Scripture, light is linked to God’s presence (Psalm 89:15), the God’s glory (Isaiah 60:1-3), life (John 33:28-30), rejoicing (Psalm 97:11), and justice (Isaiah 59:9).

But where is light first mentioned? While darkness covered the depths, “God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and God separated the light from the darkness” (Genesis 1:3–4).

With His spoken Word, God transformed dark nothingness into the beginnings of His glorious creation. At His command (just two words in the Hebrew language), “Let there be light,” God chased away the darkness.

He’s still doing that today… He transforms our darkness with His light.

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life” (John 8:12).

“… think on these things” (Philippians 4:8, KJV).
