JESUS PRAYED FOR PETER

When I think of Simon Peter, I immediately think of the disciple walking on water. I remember Pentecost, when Peter preached the Gospel and three thousand came to saving faith in Jesus. I think about his epistles and the memorable line: “Cast all your care on Jesus, because He cares for you!” (1 Peter 5:7).

Sadly, I also think about his weakness and failure. He denied his Master three times! All four Gospel-writers recall Peter’s epic failure that came before the rooster announced the morning sun (Matthew 26:69-75; Mark 14:66-72; Luke 22:54-62; John 13:36-38).

Only Luke records the conversation that occurred prior to Jesus’ prediction.

I image Peter’s bravado and Jesus’ piercing eyes. With an arm over the fisherman’s shoulder, Jesus spoke in little more than a whisper. “Simon, Simon, look out. Satan has asked to sift you like wheat. But I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And you, when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers” (Luke 22:31-32)

Notice three things. Our battle is against an evil and unseen enemy, not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil, spiritual forces in the heavens” (Ephesians 6:12).

Notice too, that we have a Faithful Intercessor. Though Satan had evil designs, Jesus prayed! He stood in the gap. And, even now, He stands “at the right hand of God and intercedes for us” (Romans 8:34). “He ever liveth to make intercession” (Hebrews 7:25, KJV).

Third, see that Jesus foresaw Peter’s restoration. “When you have turned back, strengthen your brothers!” Jesus knew that Peter would stumble, but He also knew that he would get back up. The failed fisherman became the preacher at Pentecost.

Be certain! Jesus loved Peter… and He loves you… and prays for you!

“… think on these things” (Philippians 4:8, KJV).
