JESUS PRAYED EARLY AND OFTEN

During His earthly pilgrimage, Jesus stayed in constant communication with His ever-present Father by offering up “prayers and appeals with loud cries and tears” (Hebrews 5:7).
From the very earliest days of His ministry, Jesus “often withdrew to deserted places and prayed” (Luke 5:16). Mark records a particular occasion when, “very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he got up, went out, and made his way to a deserted place; and there he was praying” (Mark 1:35).
It’s almost humorous to think of Simon Peter frantically searching for Jesus (Mark 1:36-37). When the disciple located his Rabbi, he apparently chided Him. “Where have you been?” … “Everyone is looking for you” (Mark 1:37). The crowds were swelling. Notoriety, popularity, and power were within his grasp. Peter had pressing plans, and Jesus was unnecessarily spending valuable time praying… Huh!
Jesus was illustrating for the disciples, and for us, that prayer isn’t unnecessary. It’s not a waste of valuable time. Before Jesus faced the busy day of ministry, He paused to spend time with the Father. Jesus was constantly cultivating a close relationship with His Heavenly Father (Mark 6:46; 14:32-39). His prayer times were planned, private, and prolonged.
Surely Jesus sought His Father’s direction for the day. He prayerfully pursued Divine power and protection. He interceded on behalf of His friends and followers, and His critics and detractors. If the Son of God prayed, shouldn’t we?
Jesus might have stayed in bed that morning. He could have rolled over for a couple of extra hours of shut-eye. He didn’t. For Jesus, prayer wasn’t a matter of personal convenience but of self-discipline and sacrifice.
