Abraham and Isaac trudged up the hill carrying the supplies that would allow them to build an altar and offer a sacrifice to the Living God. They had everything they needed… except a sacrifice.
“Hey dad,” Isaac asked. “We have wood, fire, and a knife, but where is the sacrifice?” “My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering” (Genesis 22:8, KJV).
“God will provide himself...”
Father and son had made the three-day journey to Mount Moriah at God’s instruction. “Take your son … your only son Isaac, whom you love, go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about” (Genesis 22:2).
Apparently, Abraham had withheld one piece of that information from his son.
Arriving at the top of the Moriah, the hill that would later be called Calvery, they positioned rocks to form an altar. They carefully placed the wood atop the rocks … then, I imagine, Abraham looked lovingly into the eyes of his son. “Isaac, my son, you are the sacrifice!”
If Isaac was seven years old, he could have outrun his one-hundred-seven-year-old daddy. If Isaac was seventeen, he could have overpowered him.
He did neither.
Isaac trusted his father, and he trusted his God. He willingly climbed onto the altar and offered himself.
Just as Isaac had done, Jesus “laid down his life for us” (1 John 3:16). The sinless Son of God said, “No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have the right to lay it down, and I have the right to take it up again” (John 10:18).
Isaac is a type of Christ.
“… think on these things” (Philippians 4:8, KJV).
