They watched Him die!
They had seen the solid-rock tomb, with the huge stone door. His lifeless body, bloody and beaten, wrapped in cloth, was sealed inside.
Jesus was dead. They buried their hopes and dreams too.
Yes, the Rabbi had taught them that “he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.” (Matthew 16:21, ESV)
Yep! He suffered alright. They killed Him, just like He had predicted. But that part about being raised ... they just couldn’t get it, yet.
Jesus was dead and buried! And they were alone!
Until, “on the first day of the week ... Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, Peace be with you!” (John 20:19-20, ESV)
Doesn’t that change everything!
If Jesus can walk out of that cold, dark tomb ... if Jesus can beat death and overcome the grave... if He can prove He is alive... then doesn’t that change everything?
It sure does!
His offer of peace was for those first century disciples in Jerusalem, but that offer is for us, today! It’s for me! And it’s for you!
Jesus is alive! That grave is empty! Hallelujah! Jesus demonstrated His might and majesty! He’s alive, and He brings peace!
Imagine it! Watch Jesus extended His nail-scared hands! Look into his compassionate eyes, as He delivers, “Peace, to you!”
