Matthew 6:19-21
Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount is packed with memorable comments worthy of memorization and meditation. For instance…
“Don’t store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don’t break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:19–21).
The American dream is a bigger house, a faster car, and a larger bank balance. Society teaches and trains us to treasure stuff, to love our technology and our toys, so we work from sun to sun to have what the neighbors have.
This isn’t a new phenomenon. Failed, fallen, and frail humanity hasn’t changed much since the days of the Tower at Babel. “They said, ‘Come, let’s build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the sky. Let’s make a name for ourselves’ ” (Genesis 11:4). They wanted a monument to their own accomplishments and achievements.
Did the tower stand forever? Of course not. Toys break. Technology soon becomes obsolete. Our fancy stuff doesn’t last but succumbs to the powers of moths and rust.
Jesus calls His children to treasure eternal matters, to “set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Colossians 3:2). Jesus invited us to invest is a sure deal… not something that can be stolen by the enemy.
Holy Father, help us to memorize Your Word and meditate upon its wonderful truths. Oh Lord, help us to treasure what You treasure!
“… think on these things” (Philippians 4:8, KJV).
