It was probably a chorus, sung in gatherings of the first-century church. Paul recorded it in his letter to the church at Philippi.

“God has highly exalted (Jesus) and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:9–11, NKJV).

These words speak of the absolute centrality and supremacy of Christ Jesus! He has been exalted above everything and everyone. There is no greater!

He is one with the Creator. “All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created” (John 1:3). “He is the image of the invisible God, … everything was created by him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and by him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:15–17).

His name is powerful. “… there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12, NKJV). He promised, “If you ask anything in My name, I will do it” (John 14:14, NKJV). In response, we declare, “Lord, our Lord, how magnificent is your name throughout the earth!” (Psalm 8:1).

As the faithful ones sang these beautiful words, they looked forward to the final scene when every knee will bow declaring Christ’s Lordship. Every knee. “Those in heaven, and those on earth, and those under the earth…” Those who accepted Him and those who rejected Him…. Those who worshipped Him and those who blasphemed His name… Those who are invited into everlasting life and those who are condemned to everlasting judgment… “Every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father!”

“… think on these things” (Philippians 4:8, KJV).
