2 Corinthians 12:9
In the twelfth chapter of Second Corinthains, Paul tells of the day that he was miraculously transported into the throne room of Almighty God. In an experience few mortals have known prior to their deaths, Paul “was caught up into paradise and heard inexpressible words, which a human being is not allowed to speak” (2 Corinthians 12:4).
Like Isaiah, Paul must have seen “the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne, and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphim were standing above him; they each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Armies; his glory fills the whole earth” (Isaiah 6:1–3).
After this incredible experience, Paul reported that God plagued him with “a thorn in the flesh … to torment me so that I would not exalt myself. Concerning this, I pleaded with the Lord three times that it would leave me. But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is perfected in weakness’ ” (2 Corinthians 12:7–9).
What was Paul’s “thorn in the flesh?” Was it a disease? Was it a crippling pain? Did he lose, or partially lose, his eyesight? Did Paul battle a certain temptation? Scholars don’t know. Whatever the particulars of his “thorn in the flesh,” Paul begged God to free him from its iron-clad grasp. The Bible says that Paul “pleaded with the Lord three times.” I doubt that Paul prayed just three times. He pleaded. He begged. He prayed believing. He prayed in faith. He prayed with Timothy and Silas. Paul prayed again, and again, and again.
God’s answer might surprise you. God didn’t say, “Yes! I’ll send a miracle your way! You can name it and claim it!” Rather, God said, “No! Suffer with it! But as you suffer, recognize that “My grace is sufficient.”
Do you have a “thorn in the flesh?”
God may choose to heal you, to set you free, to grant your request. And then again, God might say, “My grace is sufficient.”
“… think on these things” (Philippians 4:8, KJV).
