2 Timothy 3:16–17

Why should we memorize Scripture? Because God’s Word gives direction, guidance, and leadership.

Not long ago, I purchased a new propane grill. It came in a large box with many parts and pieces. Thankfully, it also came with an owner’s manual and step-by-step instructions for correct assembly. First step … second … third … Before long, the tantalizing aroma of hamburgers was wafting over the patio.

I’m grateful for instruction manuals. The Bible is God’s instruction book.

In his last epistle, probably written just before his martyrdom, the Apostle Paul wrote to his young protégé, Timothy.

“All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16–17).

“Hey, Timothy, if you want to be ready to carry on the missionary ministry that we’ve started, then read, study, memorize, and meditate upon the inspired (God-breathed) words of Scripture! It’s the how-to manual for Godly living!”

I want to know how to build my life… don’t you? So, let’s study God’s Word, the guide to living. God’s Word promises to teach truth, rebuke our failings, correct our errant understanding, and train us to better imitate Jesus.

“… think on these things” (Philippians 4:8, KJV).
