1 Peter 2:2

Why should we memorize Scripture?

Number one … God commanded His children to memorize and meditate upon His Word.

Number two … The Bible is God’s Word, the most important words ever recorded.

Number three … Scripture invites us into an intimate and ever-deepening relationship with a Holy God.

“Like newborn infants, desire the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow up into your salvation” (1 Peter 2:2). Or … “Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation”(1 Peter 2:2, NLT).

When we first enter a saving relationship with God, we’re like babies. There’s much to learn. Who is God? What is He like? What is His name? What does He desire for His children?

Peter encourages us to hunger and thirst for God’s Word, to crave it like a baby craves milk. God’s Word helps us grow… to flourish in our identity as God’s children.

My wife and I have been married for forty-six years. Our love continues to grow… but that doesn’t happen by accident. We communicate. We share. We express our feelings, our hurts, our joys, our needs.

The same is true in our relationship with God. He speaks to us through His Word. It is by reading His Word that we grow to understand His heart. So, memorize and meditate on it…

“Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation.”

“… think on these things” (Philippians 4:8, KJV).
