Romans 8:38-39
Because of his child-like faith, the thief on the cross was saved from condemnation, anguish, agony, and everlasting, never-ending death. Instead of eternal Hell, the repentant man was ushered into glorious paradise… Heaven.
Like the repentant thief, we didn’t do anything to deserve God’s grace. We were saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Jesus alone. We weren’t good enough to be saved, and we’ll never be good enough to stay saved.
We’re something like the great Apostle Paul who admitted he didn’t always do the good things he knew he should do, and he did the very things he knew he shouldn’t (Romans 7:15-19). Even so, he could confidently proclaim: “There is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1). Hallelujah!
“Since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1). That peace is ours because of what Jesus accomplished at Calvary! We didn’t earn it, and we don’t deserve it!
God’s gift is eternal life! It’s not life until we screw up! It’s not peace with God until we cross the line … until we sin badly enough.
How can I be sure of my everlasting, eternal security? I’m not dependent upon my feeble efforts … I’m assured because Jesus promised to keep me safe, secured, saved forever! I trusted Jesus to save me, and I trust Jesus to keep me!
So… memorize and meditate on this: “I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39).
“… think on these things” (Philippians 4:8, KJV).
