 We’re in a battle!

Like a Roman soldier, we must “put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil, spiritual forces in the heavens” (Ephesians 6:11-12).

Paul continued by describing the battle-ready uniform of a good soldier. He had a helmet, body armor, boots, a belt, and a shield. Offensively, a first century Roman soldier had only one tool… his sword. “Take the … the sword of the Spirit—which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17).

The soldier knew his weapon needed to be sharp and always at the ready! If Paul had been describing a twenty-first-century soldier, he might have said, “put bullets in your gun!”

What are the bullets? What do we need to have loaded before we encounter “the cosmic powers of this darkness, … evil, spiritual forces”?

God gave Joshua the answer. “Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do” (Joshua 1:8, NLT). We’ll only win life’s battles if we know and follow God’s instructions. So, load your pistol with God’s word! Memorize it. Meditate on it.

Write God’s Word on your heart … Start by writing Scripture on a Post-It-Note. Tape them to your bathroom mirror or to your computer monitor. Write them in your Day-Timer or record them in your phone. If you want to memorize it and meditate on in, then keep reading it over … and over … and over … and over again. Put your bullets in your gun! Be ready for battle.

“… think on these things” (Philippians 4:8, KJV).
