MOM

According to the chronology of Mark’s Gospel and Luke’s Gospel, Jesus’ first healing miracle occurred at Peter’s home in Capernaum. Prior to this event, there is no record of Jesus healing leprosy, or blindness, or any other physical ailment.

It happened like this: “As soon as they left the synagogue, they went into Simon and Andrew’s house with James and John. Simon’s mother-in-law was lying in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once” (Mark 1:29-30). The physician, Dr. Luke wrote: “After he left the synagogue, he entered Simon’s house. Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked him about her” (Luke 4:38).

Peter loved his mother-in-law… I suspect he called her “mom.” “Mom” had a “high fever.” Without antibiotics and other modern medicine, this could be fatal! Life-expectancy was short!

After returning home from the synagogue, Peter explained to the Lord. “My wife’s mother is in the other room… she’s very sick… it’s a terribly high fever… I’m worried about her… Is there anything you can do?”

Peter hadn’t seen Jesus perform healing miracles, so it may not have occurred to him that Jesus could, or would, miraculously heal his beloved “mom.” So, Peter “told (Jesus) about her at once.”

Jesus didn’t say, “I’m exhausted! I need to sit down, eat a bite of supper, and then go to bed…” Rather, He immediately “went to her, took her by the hand, and raised her up. The fever left her” (Mark 1:31). Jesus “rebuked the fever, and it left her” (Luke 4:39).

Can you see the joyful tears welling up in Peter’s eyes? Can you imagine Peter’s young bride, watching the scene in stunned silence? And the mother-in-law … racked with fever, weak, tired, feeble, dying?

“The fever left her, and she began to serve them” (Mark 1:31). “She got up immediately and began to serve them” (Luke 4:39). She sprang out of bed and wrapped an apron around her waist. “Jesus, can I get You something to eat?”

“Thank you, Jesus!”

“… think on these things” (Philippians 4:8, KJV).
