On at least one occasion, Jesus took his disciples to the farthest northern edge of Israelite territory, the southern slope of beautiful Mount Hermon, and the city of Caesarea Philippi. It was at this location that Jesus asked His disciples two important questions.
First, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” (Matthew 16:13).
Peter and his associates reported that some thought that Jesus was “John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, that one of the ancient prophets has come back” (Luke 9:19). Most people thought of Jesus as a good man, a good teacher, even a great prophet.
The second question was more important. “But you … who do you say that I am?” (Mark 8:29). Peter was the first to speak. “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16).
This may be the most important question that we will ever answer. Who is Jesus?
Is Jesus just another religious leader? Is He a better-than-average teacher of spiritual truths? Is Jesus a miracle worker who somehow defied the laws of nature and science?
Peter said that Jesus was the Messiah. That is, Jesus was the fulfillment of every Old Testament prophecy concerning the Anointed One, the One to eternally reign upon David’s throne (2 Samuel 7:13) as King of every king.
And Peter pronounced Jesus as the “Son of the living God.” Jesus wasn’t just a good Jewish boy who grew up to become the Messiah. He was the only Son of Almighty Creator God who came from Heaven to earth to save His lost and dying creation.
So, who is Jesus? Is He your Savior, the One who shed innocent blood to ransom you from death and hell? Is He Lord and Master, Ruler of your life? Is Jesus your Faithful Friend who knows you and your every need? Who is Jesus?
“… think on these things” (Philippians 4:8, KJV).
