THE GOLDEN GLOB

“When the people saw that Moses delayed in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said to him, ‘Come, make gods for us who will go before us because this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt—we don’t know what has happened to him!’ ” (Exodus 32:1).

The Nation had witnessed God’s great and gracious power as He led them away from slavery in Egypt. Ten plagues… the red carpet through the Red Sea… a pillar of fire at night and a pillar of clouds during the day… life-giving water that gushed from a rock… and bread that rained from heaven every morning. But when Moses was out of sight for forty days, they begged for a new god. They turned a blind eye to all that the Living God had done and were ready to follow a dead, man-made god… a glob of gold.

When the people approached Aaron, the eighty-three-year-old brother of Moses, he quickly concocted a plan. “ ‘Take off the gold rings that are on the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters and bring them to me.’ So all the people took off the gold rings that were on their ears and brought them to Aaron. He took the gold from them, fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made it into an image of a calf. Then they said, ‘Israel, these are your gods, who brought you up from the land of Egypt!’ ” (Exodus 32:2-4).

Aaron formed an altar and announced a festival in honor of the golden glob! “Early the next morning they arose, offered burnt offerings, and presented fellowship offerings. The people sat down to eat and drink, and got up to party” (Exodus 32:6).

They frolicked and cavorted! They sang and danced! They sacrificed, worshipped, and paid homage. “Hail to the golden glob!” Can you imagine?

Before we crucify them, let’s ask ourselves…

Do we trust in our wealth and our resources?

Do we serve our busy-ness?

Do we honor our own skills and capacities?

Do we seek anyone or anything for guidance and direction?

Do we have our own golden globs?

“… think on these things” (Philippians 4:8, KJV).
