THAT’S MY ROOF!

It is widely believed that Mark wrote The Gospel of Mark after sitting with Peter and listening to his accounts of Jesus’ life and ministry. Mark tells Peter’s story.

Mark’s second chapter starts like this: “When he entered Capernaum again after some days, it was reported that he was at home” (Mark 2:1). When Jesus and His disciples returned to Capernaum, Jesus “was at home.” What home? Peter’s home, the place that became the base of operation for Jesus’ Galilean ministry.

On this particular day, Peter could remember seeing Jesus seated in his living room, engaging the gathering crowd with His interpretation of the Old Testament Scriptures. I suspect that Peter was bursting with pride that his Rabbi had chosen his modest home … his home.

As Peter scanned the people packed into every corner of his home, he could see “Pharisees and teachers of the law … who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea, and also from Jerusalem” (Luke 5:17). As Jesus was “speaking the word to them” (Mark 2:2), dust, dirt, and debris began to fall from a growing hole in the roof. “Hey,” Peter thought, “that’s my roof!”

Unbeknownst to Peter, a team of four friends had brought their paralyzed pal to Jesus, hoping … no believing … that Jesus would heal him. “Since they were not able to bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and after digging through it, they lowered the mat on which the paralytic was lying” (Mark 2:4).

When Jesus saw “their faith” (Mark 2:5), the faith of the four men, He healed the man laying before Him… He healed him spiritually and physically!

“Immediately he got up, took the mat, and went out in front of everyone. As a result, they were all astounded and gave glory to God, saying, ‘We have never seen anything like this!’ ”

(Mark 2:12). “They were awestruck!” (Matthew 9:8), “filled with awe and said, ‘We have seen incredible things today’ ”(Luke 5:26).

But Peter? What about Peter? Was he angry? “That’s my roof! Who’s gonna fix my roof?” Maybe. But I’d prefer to see Peter, paying no attention to the hole in his roof, but rather, on his knees. “Astounded! … Awestruck! ... Filled with awe!”

“That’s my roof… We can fix it later…”

“… think on these things” (Philippians 4:8, KJV).
