King David sinned a great sin! Crushed by guilt and shame, David cried to the Lord for forgiveness! “I waited patiently for the Lord, and he turned to me and heard my cry for help. He brought me up from a desolate pit, out of the muddy clay, and set my feet on a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God” (Psalm 40:1–3). Forgiven, transformed, made new, David sang a new song!
The early church sang new songs. Most likely, the church at Philippi sang of Christ’s humble sacrifice and ultimate victory. “Christ Jesus, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be exploited. Instead he emptied himself by assuming the form of a servant, taking on the likeness of humanity. And when he had come as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death—even to death on a cross. For this reason God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow—in heaven and on earth and under the earth—and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:5–11).
In Heaven we’ll sing a new song (Revelation 5:9; 14:3), a song declaring Jesus’ grace and goodness, His mercy and majesty. In an everlasting chorus, all the redeemed of all the ages, will lift our voices in worship! We’ll sing a new song.
“… think on these things” (Philippians 4:8, KJV).
