He is called the “God of Glory” (Psalm 29:3), the “Father of Glory” (Ephesians 1:17, ESV), the “King of Glory” (Psalm 24:7), the “Lord of Glory” (1 Corinthians 2:8), and the “Spirit of Glory” (1 Peter 4:14).
The Israelites, standing on the eastern shores of the Red Sea, were promised a view of God’s visible presence. “You will see the Lord’s glory!” (Exodus 16:7). At Sinai, “when Moses went up the mountain, the cloud covered it. The glory of the Lord settled on Mount Sinai … The appearance of the Lord’s glory to the Israelites was like a consuming fire on the mountaintop” (Exodus 24:15–17).
After constructing God’s tabernacle, “the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle” (Exodus 40:34) and at the dedication of the temple, “when Solomon finished praying, fire descended from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the Lord filled the temple” (2 Chronicles 7:1).
Isaiah was also given a glimpse of God’s glory. “In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne, and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphim were standing above him; they each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Armies; his glory fills the whole earth” (Isaiah 6:1–3)
Have you ever seen His glory? I have.
Last Sunday, as the faithful followers of Christ gathered at 5209 South Georgia Street, as the waters in the baptistry were stirred, as the musicians and choir led us in singing a mix of traditional hymns and beautiful contemporary songs, as hearts bowed in prayer, as the Word was taught, as sacrifices filled the offering plates, and as hugs and handshakes were shared… the “God of Glory”, the “Father of Glory”, the “King of Glory”, the “Lord of Glory”, the “Spirit of Glory”was present and clearly visible.
“… think on these things” (Philippians 4:8, KJV).
