Only three men were invited to hang-out with Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration… “Peter, James, and John” (Mark 9:2).
And only three men were invited into the Garden of Gethsemane to witness a most holy moment as Jesus poured His heart out before His Father… “Peter and the two sons of Zebedee” (Matthew 26:37).
“Peter, James, and John”, were among the earliest disciples and members of the elite group of “twelve Apostles.” These three men formed Jesus’ inner circle. They were Jesus’ constant companions, His most trusted confidants, His most loyal attendants. These men were given access to these unparallelled events. Think about it… they saw Jesus transformed, transfigured! They watched from a short distance as Jesus sweat drops of blood as He knelt before God (Luke 22:44). Indeed, they heard Jesus say, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me—nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done” (Luke 22:42).
These men, the inner circle, were with Jesus the day Jairus approached.
Jairus was a “synagogue leader,” presumably in Capernaum. Likely antagonistic concerning Jesus’ nontraditional teaching, he knew Who to go to with his desperate need. His twelve-year-old daughter was dying, and Jairus ran to meet Jesus, “fell at his feet and begged him earnestly, ‘My little daughter is dying. Come and lay your hands on her so that she can get well and live’ ” (Mark 5:22–23). The miracles that Jesus had previously performed convinced Jairus that Jesus could heal his sweet baby girl, so Jairus begged for Jesus’ attention.
Without an argument, and without delay, Jesus marched toward the religious leader’s home where He was informed that the girl had just expired. “People came from the synagogue leader’s house and said, “Your daughter is dead. Why bother the teacher anymore?” (Mark 5:35). With a comforting arm around Jairus’s shoulder, Jesus spoke with absolute confidence. “Don’t be afraid. Only believe” (Mark 5:36).
Approaching the home, Jesus “did not let anyone accompany him except Peter, James, and John” (Mark 5:37). Leaving everyone else outside, Jesus took His inner circle as witnesses. Inside the home, “He took the child by the hand and said to her … ‘Little girl, I say to you, get up.’ Immediately the girl got up and began to walk” (Mark 5:41–42).
Jairus was astounded! Peter was astounded. James and John were astounded! “They were utterly astounded!” (Mark 5:42).
“… think on these things” (Philippians 4:8, KJV).
