Moses ... and his folks

Bible Trivia for $100, Alex... The father and mother of Moses ... Answer: Who are Amram and Jochebed?

After centuries of slavery, the Egyptian taskmasters were making life most miserable for the exiled Hebrews. But even in their dismal and difficult lives, God continued to multiply them. There were just seventy in the family when Jacob moved to Goshen. Now there were thousands upon thousands.

Due to the Egyptian’s fears of being outnumbered and overrun, Pharaoh, Egypt’s ruthless tyrant, issued a decree that all the Hebrew baby boys should be cast into the Nile River... execution by drowning! Sadistic, heartless, cruel ... sad!

That’s when Moses was born, and when Amram and Jochebed were faced with a life and death decision. Would they murder their baby, or would they risk their own lives as they made an effort to save the baby’s life?

You know the story. They did what was right! They defied the Egyptian dictator in order to obey a higher authority.

The brief entry in the Hall of Faith reads, “By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.” (Hebrews 11:23, ESV)

Amram and Jochebed were not afraid. Amram and Jochebed were faithful.

So, here’s a question to ponder. Will we obey God, even if it costs us ... everything?

Although we’re not faced with that decision today, this coronavirus thing has taught us something ... life can change over-night!

So, suppose, just suppose, you are faced with a life and death decision. Obey the evil edict of a wicked authority .... or following God faithfully, fearlessly?

I’m not trying to be alarmist. I’m suggesting that Amram and Jochebed teach us to prepare for the hard decision we may face ... someday.

Moral dilemmas for everything, Alex...
