The best thing I can do for my kids is ______.
There are so many ways we could complete that sentence. And most well-meaning parenting suggestions are good.
Support and encourage them.
Spend quality time with them.
Discipline them fairly.
But what is the best thing?
I'm learning that the best thing I can do for my kids is love Jesus more.
The best thing for them is for me to put all my attention on Him. To be increasingly awed by the way Jesus has found me and resurrected me and kept me.
As my love for Jesus deepens, He transforms my parenting. He lavishes grace on me for cranky attitudes on difficult days. He speaks truth for hard decisions. He offers patience when I'm too quick to anger. He has Good News of great joy for our exhausted home.
In parenting, all I need is more Jesus. So, do my kids see me delighting in His Word? Do they understand that I belong 100 percent to His body, the Church? Do they know that Jesus is my peace and my hope for all of life?
Jesus once said that the only thing necessary is to focus completely on Him (Luke 10:42). The Bible calls the Good News of Jesus the most important thing (I Corinthians 15:3-4).
Love Jesus more. That's how I need to fill in the blank. That's the best thing I can do.
