When Will Jesus Save My Kid?

August 2, 2016

I was saved when I was 6 years old. Dining room table, family devotion. I knew my sin and knew I needed Jesus.

Now I've got a 5 1/2 year old, and I'm getting antsy. When will Jesus save her? Surely it will be soon, right? How much longer?

What do we do when we think our child is close to trusting Jesus for salvation? Here are some suggestions:

Pray.

Pray plainly and boldly that God would save your child from sin and death. There is no better plea. Pray that your kid would be eager to hear the Gospel of Jesus and be ready to believe. Pray that you would not miss opportunities to speak about the Gospel. Pray.

Keep the Gospel in front of your kid.

Is the Good News of Jesus on repeat in your kids’ ears? Are you reading the Bible and seeing Jesus daily at home? Have you made church-going a priority? Are you unashamed of your salvation in their presence?

Let the Gospel be really good news to you — so good that you can’t help but point your kids to Jesus continually. Tell them over and over what Jesus has done and how to respond to such Good News.

Trust God.

Remember that salvation is God's work. He desires that "not...any should perish, but that all should reach repentance" (2 Peter 3:9). He wants to save our kids. Don’t be pushy. Instead, Mom and Dad, be patient. Your worry and pressure might lead to a reckless decision and false assurance. Trust God and listen to your child. The same Spirit who saved you is even now at work in them, leading them to repent and believe.
